Fighting Diabetes in Singapore: A National and Community Effort

This World Diabetes Day, Singapore is stepping up its fight against one of the nation’s most pressing health challenges. With an estimated 700,000 adults currently living with diabetes and projections pointing to 1 million cases by 2050, the government, companies, and community organisations are coming together to turn the tide.

Sugar Smart Nation: A Movement That Starts at Work

Launched as part of World Diabetes Day, the new Sugar Smart Nation movement aims to make healthier living part of workplace culture.

Seven companies have already joined the initiative, partnering with Diabetes Singapore to run lunchtime talks, health screenings, and wellness activities. The goal is to educate employees and empower them to make informed dietary and lifestyle decisions. Organisers are eyeing more companies to come on board ahead of the full rollout in 2026.

Community Support to Empower Patients

Beyond the workplace, community groups are also playing a key role in supporting those living with diabetes.

Diabetes Singapore has seen a 34% increase in patient volume and is stepping up efforts to support primary care with eye and foot screenings, essential services to catch diabetes complications early. The organisation is looking to scale its efforts as demand grows, helping patients take more control of their condition and access the care they need closer to home.

Together, these efforts reflect a strong, coordinated approach to education, early detection, and community empowerment which are the key pillars in managing and preventing diabetes in Singapore. Whether you’re an employer, caregiver, or living with diabetes yourself, now is the time to get involved and be part of the change.
